A change of plea hearing was held Tuesday afternoon in Fourth Judicial District Court for a man charged with sexual assault. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

Change of Plea

Pursuant the terms of a plea agreement reached with the State, 24-year-old Hunter Weiss pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault in the third degree. In exchange for the guilty plea, the State agreed to dismiss a first degree sexual assault charge. The plea agreement is for a 2 to 6 year prison sentence and is binding, which means that if the Court rejects the sentence recommendation at sentencing and deviates from the 2 to 6 year sentence, Weiss can withdraw his guilty plea and the case will then move forward to trial.

District Court Judge Darci Phillips ordered that a presentence investigation report be completed by the Department of Corrections Division of Probation and Parole and scheduled sentencing for October 30 at 11 am. Weiss was remanded to the custody of the Sheridan County Detention Center pending sentencing after Judge Phillips revoked his bond.

The sexual assault occurred on December 25, 2022 when Weiss was an employee of Volunteers of America Northern Rockies and was transporting a female VOA resident to the Emergency Room to be treated for a urinary tract infection. Weiss pulled the vehicle over before arriving at the hospital and sexually assaulted the woman.
