Sheridan Police Chief Travis Koltiska joined Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to share safety tips for children walking to school.
Thousands of Wyoming students walk to and from school each day. For families learning a new route, Koltiska recommends that parents walk it with their children and practice the rules they expect: use marked crossings, and look left–right–left before stepping off the curb, even in a crosswalk.

Families are also urged to teach children to use sidewalks whenever they’re available. If there’s no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from vehicles as possible, and obey all signs and signals. Teach kids to stop at the curb, keep scanning while crossing, avoid crossing between parked cars, and make eye contact with drivers before entering the roadway.
At dawn, dusk or in low light, choose bright or reflective clothing and well-lit routes; a small flashlight can help. Reflective strips on backpacks or jackets improve visibility.
For more back-to-school safety resources, families can contact their school district and the Sheridan Police Department is always willing to help.
