The Clearmont Historical Group held their August meeting on August 18 at the Clearmont Historical Center.
Sandy Hirz, Center Director, reported on the CHG Ice Cream Social which was held earlier in August. She said that around 70 people attended the social, and the silent auction and donations from the day totaled over $1500. They want to thank everyone who came to the Social and donated to the Center.
Hirz passed around a card from a visitor who stopped by the center.
Member Meshelle Cooper asked what his motivation was for purchasing books about Clearmont. Hirz responded, “good question,”
After I-90 by-passed Clearmont in favor of Buffalo in the 1960s, most businesses in Clearmont closed, so the man had to have first traveled through Clearmont before the interstate was opened. President Robert Prusak added that he wanted to ‘give back’ to the community.

Fran Felz, center volunteer, also reported that the Center had three visitors from France.
Prusak reported on the work being done on the back room of the center to make it more handicapped accessible, using the monies from the AARP Community Challenge Grant. He also reported that the new plaques at the site of the old rock school were now installed.
He talked about the upcoming Huson House Clean-up which will be held on Saturday, August 23, from 9-12, saying everyone was welcome to come and help with the cleaning.
The upcoming Veteran’s Day program to be held on November 11 at 11 a.m., (11-11-11) was discussed, and Prusak talked about an upcoming program on November 20.
Contact the center for more information about these programs. Email clearmonthistory@gmail.com or call 307-758-4685.
The group also discussed what hours to have the Center open. Member Ira Roadifer felt the Center should at least be open on Saturday. Briefly discussed were the fall tours, but no action was taken as to whether or not the tours will be held this fall.
Next meeting will be September 15, at 1 p.m., at the Sheridan Library Fulmer Room.
