A 23-year-old man changed his plea on a number of charges related to an incident in the Wal-Mart parking lot in May. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.
During the afternoon hours of May 7, 2025, officers with the Sheridan Police Department responded to a DUI-Reddi report at the Wal-Mart parking lot. Once law enforcement arrived on scene, they located the white Chevrolet Impala that was called in on the Reddi report. The driver, and lone occupant of the vehicle, Chase Shakespeare exited the stolen Impala and a foot chase ensued where Shakespeare was apprehended and arrested in the Arby’s parking lot and booked into the Sheridan County Detention Center.
Shakespeare, at a change of plea hearing this week in Fourth Judicial District Court, pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft, one count of misdemeanor DUI and one count of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine. The guilty pleas were pursuant to a plea agreement that was reached with the State that recommends a 2 to 4 year prison sentence for the theft charge, suspended in favor of three years of supervised probation and 180 days in jail for each misdemeanor count and to run the sentences concurrent to one another. The suspended prison sentence will run consecutive to the 180 day jail sentence.
District Court Judge Darci Phillips ordered that a presentence investigation be completed by the Department of Corrections Division of Probation and Parole. Shakespeare’s bond was revoked and he was remanded to the custody of the Sheridan County Detention Center pending sentencing.
According to court documents, Shakespeare admitted to stealing the Impala after he saw the keys in the unlocked vehicle. He also told law enforcement that he had been huffing from an air-duster just prior to driving the stolen vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot, where he caused damage to three vehicles by striking two of them in the parking lot.
