Game and Fish reminds hunters to stay Bear Wise

Hunting season is underway, and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is reminding hunters and outdoor recreationists to stay alert in bear country.

Hunters and bears are often active at the same times and places, which increases the chances of encounters. According to the Game and Fish, carcasses, game calls and moving quietly through the backcountry can all draw bears in.

Large Carnivore Conflict Coordinator Brian DeBolt said preparation and awareness are key to minimizing bear-human conflicts.

“It takes effort and preparation to pursue big game in bear country. We want all hunters and recreationists to enjoy the outdoors and be bear-wise to minimize the chances of bear-human conflicts,” DeBolt said. “We encourage all to have a heightened awareness and be prepared for an encounter with a bear.”

Game and Fish encourages hunters to carry bear spray, stay alert to signs of bear activity and keep a clean camp.
