Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez and Undersheriff Lt. Doug Sanders are alerting parents and guardians to a sextortion scam victimizing children.
Sheriff Dominguez has made scam awareness a priority during his appearances on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse. While scammers often target seniors, during his most recent appearance the sheriff warned that predators are now blackmailing teens into sending inappropriate material through mobile devices.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation defines this crime, known as sextortion, as predators coercing children into sending explicit images or videos by threatening to expose them—or demanding money—if they don’t comply. It can begin on any app, website, game, or messaging platform where predators pose as peers, offer favors, or build trust to lure young victims.
Sheriff Dominguez said his office has investigated cases where children were exploited for long periods because they were too ashamed or too afraid of their parents’ response to come forward. He urges parents to have open conversations with their children and assure them that honesty is the fastest way to get help.

Experts recommend parents keep an open dialogue with their children about online risks, monitor digital activity and remind them that no mistake is worth their safety.
