News – Sheridan Media

On September 2, Sharie Shada, Site Superintendent of LX Bar Ranch State Historic Site, announced that on September 21, beginning at 9 a.m., those interested in area history are invited on a tour of the LX Bar Ranch. The LX Bar Ranch is one of the historic Kendrick Cattle Company ranches not far from Clearmont.

The LX Bar Ranch State Historic Site is managed by staff at Trail End State Historic Site in Sheridan, Wyoming. Trail End, built in 1913 and otherwise known as the Kendrick Mansion, was the in-town residence of the John B. Kendrick family. The LX Bar Ranch, built in 1910, was one of their ten cattle ranches.

The LX Bar is not currently accessible to the public for regular tours, so this is a rare chance to visit the historic property. This tour will depart at 9:00 a.m. from Clearmont, Wyoming, where visitors will load a bus and travel to the ranch.

Once at the ranch, State Historic Site staff will be on hand to lead tours of the buildings and answer questions, and visitors will be able to explore the site at their leisure. The estimated return time to Clearmont is 2:00 pm.

On the tour, visitors will get to see inside the buildings, which are built from locally-quarried sandstone. This will include the five-bedroom main house, cowboy’s bunk house, ice house, solar-heated chicken coop, hospital shed, and horse barn.

Because the ranch is in a remote place, interested parties should visit trailend.org to read all of the information available and know what to expect on this tour. Site Superintendent Sharie Shada explains, “this will be like stepping back into 1910 when the ranch was built: there is no running water, electricity, and certainly no cell phone service.” Portable toilets will be available, however.

Tickets must be booked in advance, and are $20 each. Tour capacity is limited to 45 people. Tour goers should bring sack lunches, water, a hat, sunscreen, and sturdy walking shoes. They also must be able to climb stairs and walk on uneven terrain.

Both the LX Bar and Trail End State Historic Sites are a part of Wyoming State Parks and Historic Sites. For more information, visit their website at www.trailend.org, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/trailend, or call us at 307-674-4589.
