With fall approaching and bear activity on the rise, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is urging residents and visitors to be “bear aware” and take steps to reduce potential conflicts.
By September, bears are entering a phase that drives them to forage constantly for food, creating fat reserves for the winter hibernation ahead. Game and Fish officials say bears that become accustomed to finding food near people or homes can quickly become dangerous.
The department is recommending residents:
Store food, garbage, livestock feed, pet food and other attractants in bear-proof containers or secure buildings.
Confine pets and livestock indoors at night with latched doors, and avoid feeding cats and dogs outside.
Consider electric fencing to protect vegetable gardens, compost piles, beehives, fruit trees and domestic flocks.
According to the department, residents who need electric fencing materials or assistance with installation can contact the Game and Fish Jackson Regional office.
Conflicts with bears should be reported immediately to the Game and Fish Sheridan Regional Office or by calling the 24-hour tip line at 1-877-WGFD-TIP (943-3857).
More information about safety and ways to reduce encounters can be found on the department’s Bear Wise Wyoming webpage.
