News – Sheridan Media
The Sheridan Police Department is warning residents of an extortion scam. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.
On Monday, September 8, the Sheridan Police Department received a report of a mailed letter claiming the recipient had clicked on a suspicious link on the internet. According to the SPD, the letter contains printed images depicting child sexual abuse and alleges that the illegal images have been planted on the recipient’s network. Money is then demanded within 36 hours by using a QR code or URL for a Bitcoin, Coinbase, or Cash App payment, or law enforcement will be contacted. The letter mentions the recipient’s family members by name to further scare the recipient.
The SPD is working with the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation and the Internet Crimes Against Children task force. There have been additional reports of the child sexual abuse material extortion scam throughout other parts of Wyoming. If you receive an unexpected letter-sized envelope in the mail with Canadian postage, do not open it and contact the SPD at 307-672-2413. Additionally, do not contact the sender and do not send the sender any money.
