Wyoming Highway Patrol Captain Erik Jorgensen and Lieutenant Louis Tegdesch urged the public to watch for wildlife during their commutes.

Wildlife are most active during the dawn and dusk hours. It’s these times wildlife frequent roads at the same time as drivers, Tegdesch said. During these low-light periods, drivers often don’t see deer before a collision. As the seasons change and temperature drops, wildlife activity along the roadways will increase.

The Lieutenant said many crashes could be avoided by slowing down and being more attentive when traveling. The public is reminded that in most cases more than one deer may be attempting to cross.

If drivers collide with deer or other large wildlife on the road, they are encouraged to call their local law enforcement agency to report the accident. Drivers also can report roadkill on the Wyoming Department of Transportation’s 511 app.

Wildlife-vehicle collisions can occur on all types of roadways, from interstate highways to city streets. Drivers are urged to use caution and stay alert to prevent wildlife-vehicle collisions when traveling Wyoming roads and highways during the fall season.
