U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited Wyoming Thursday on her Returning Education to the States Tour. Secretary McMahon toured Jackson Hole Classical Academy and participated in a roundtable discussion with Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder, and community leaders about the best practices that have driven education forward in the state.

Secretary McMahon said Wyoming students have consistently outperformed national learning averages in recent years, ranking in the top 5 for 4th grade math and reading in this year’s Nation’s Report Card assessment. McMahon added that it was great to see firsthand one of the education models that has propelled this success and talk with Governor Gordon and Superintendent Degenfelder about how Wyoming’s approach—particularly its focus on early literacy, strong community involvement, and support for teachers—can serve as a model for other states.

Governor Gordon said through initiatives like RIDE, which reimagines how we deliver education, and WIP, which strengthens career pathways and economic opportunities for our students, we are empowering local communities, supporting our teachers, and ensuring every student is prepared for the future. Gordon added that it was an honor to share Wyoming’s story with Secretary McMahon and highlight the innovative approaches that are helping our students thrive.
