Few Americans are prepared for a crisis. A 2024 survey found just 32 percent have a will — a six percent drop from the year before, and the first decline since 2020.

Understanding wills, trusts, and powers of attorney can be difficult under normal circumstances, let alone for family members grieving a loss.

Estate lawyers Tim Tarver and Christopher Sherwood, representing both Sheridan and Johnson counties, will lead this year’s Estate Planning Seminar. For 27 years, Tarver and his colleagues have provided guidance to help residents prepare for worst-case scenarios.

This year’s Estate Planning Seminar will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Hub on Smith. Each year, organizers take steps to analyze trends and identify information they feel community members need to make informed decisions for the welfare of their family and estate. Tarver said information on pitfalls often overlooked in this complicated process will be added to the discussion.

While conversations about wills, trusts, and health care decisions are often linked to senior citizens, Sherwood said the information is important for anyone over the age of 18.

Presentations are structured to let attendees come and go, focusing on information that best fits their needs. Refreshments will be served during breaks, and lunch will be provided by event sponsors.

The Estate Planning Public Seminar is free and open to everyone. Registration is not required but is appreciated to help organizers plan for meals. To make a reservation, call 307-673-5000.
