Sheriff’s Office seeks new applicants

September 26, 2025

News – Sheridan Media

Undersheriff Patrol Lieutenant Doug Sanders and Detention Center Lieutenant Charles Gibbons appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the Sheriff’s Office hiring process and announce that the department is actively seeking new applicants.

According to Gibbons, working in the detention center requires deputies who possess problem-solving ability, strong communication and mediation skills, and the ability to react quickly in a crisis. He noted detention deputies are often the first face someone sees on their worst day.

Applicants must be 18 years or older to serve in the detention center and 21 years or older to serve on the road as a patrol deputy. Each division requires specialized training at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy in Douglas: the Detention Officer Basic Course (seven weeks) or the Peace Officer Basic Course (14 weeks). Gibbons said he enjoyed his time at the DOB because it was efficient and effective.

Undersheriff Sanders, who began his career in the detention center before moving to patrol, said the agency provides clear paths for growth and service.

Both Sanders and Gibbons agreed that no two days are ever the same within the Sheriff’s Office.

Those interested in a career in law enforcement are encouraged to shadow detention deputies, join a patrol ride-along, or apply directly. Resumes may be delivered to the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office or visit the website and learn more by clicking here
