The Bureau of Land Management is alerting the public that the agency has approved and scheduled a lease sale for coal reserves in the Powder River Basin, opening more than 3,500 acres for competitive bidding next month.
The application, submitted by Navajo Transitional Energy Company, is for certain coal resources located within the Powder River Basin region that are recoverable through surface mining methods.
The Record of Decision and supporting documents are available for public review on the BLM eplanning website.
The sale is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the BLM Wyoming State Office in Cheyenne. According to the BLM, approximately 441 million tons of in-place coal are contained within the lease area known as West Antelope III Lease By Application (LBA), located in Campbell and Converse counties roughly 15 miles south of Wright, with approximately 365 million tons considered to be recoverable through surface mining.
Only qualified bidders may participate and the highest cash bid that meets or exceeds fair market value will be accepted.
