A young buck deer was recently captured for a short period so Wyoming Game and Fish Department officials could remove a soccer net from its antlers.
Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt said wardens chose not to sedate the animal and managed to remove most of the net that could have affected its mobility.
Schmidt said the remaining portion of the net isn’t causing mobility or eating issues.

The buck was last seen in a neighborhood a couple of blocks from Sheridan Junior High School.
In Wyoming, elk begin rubbing off their velvet in early August, followed by moose and deer in early to mid-September, as their antlers harden for the breeding season. This process involves rubbing against vegetation to remove the blood-rich velvet, which dries, itches, and may even be consumed by the animal.
Schmidt recommended laying down or putting away sporting nets when not in use. She said antlered animals often walk through or rub against the poles, becoming entangled.
If you notice the buck showing mobility or eating issues due to the net, please call the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Sheridan Regional Office at 307-672-7418.
