Beartooth Highway Closed For Winter 2025-26 Season

What has been closed for almost two weeks is now officially closed until next summer.

US Highway 212 over the Beartooth Pass in Northwest Wyoming and Southern Montana, is closed for the upcoming winter season.

October 15th is the normal targeted closure date, but the highway has been closed since October 3rd, due to winter weather that hit the area, and has not reopened since that time.

The National Park Service normally oversees snow removal on the Wyoming side of the highway, but with the government shutdown still on-going, snowplow crews have been unable to do so.

The closure area is between 9.4 miles east of the intersection of US Highway 212 and Wyoming State Highway 296, just past Long Lake, to about 12 miles southwest of Red Lodge, Montana.

That section of highway gets up to almost 11,000 feet above sea level.

Too much snow combined with too little traffic, makes snow plowing efforts on the highway impractical, hence the highway is closed.

The highway usually reopens to motor vehicle traffic around Memorial Day.
