On October 15, Knecht Home Center, a cornerstone of the Rapid City area market since 1928, is officially changing its name to Mead Lumber effective October 16, 2025. The company also operates under that name in Spearfish, South Dakota, Gillette and Sheridan, Wyoming, and Cañon City, Colorado.
Barry Kriha Director of Marketing for Mead Lumber was in Sheridan for the renaming event, which included a ribbon cutting, a presentation of a plaque to area managers, and updating of the signage on the store.
This change unifies Mead Lumber’s identity under one brand while maintaining the same high standards of service and quality customers expect, Kriha said.
Mead Lumber is still connected with ACE Hardware, so customers can purchase ACE hardware along with their home improvement items. “We are a lumber yard with a retail hardware experience,” Kriha said.
Mead has 53 locations in 9 states. They have two locations in Sheridan, Mead also owns the ACE store on Coffeen Ave, as well as Gillette and two stores in Cheyenne.

He said that Mead Lumber is an employee owned company.

This change strengthens our identity, supports our employee-owners, and reinforces our commitment to providing customers with trusted service and quality products.”
Customers can rest assured that the core values and high standards of service will remain unchanged. The same team that has served the community for decades will continue to do so with the same level of dedication and expertise.
