The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has launched an investigation into a suspicious object discovered on Tuesday morning, October 21st, outside the State Capitol.
Initially described as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), the object prompted the evacuation of the Capitol building at approximately 9:45 am after Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) troopers were alerted to its presence.
Following a thorough sweep, the Capitol complex was confirmed safe and subsequently reopened.
The WHP requested DCI to lead the investigation, which involves the collaboration of numerous law enforcement agencies.
These partners include the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office, Cheyenne Police Department, the Joint EOD Team, Cheyenne Fire Rescue, AMR, the FBI, the ATF, the U.S. DHS, and the Department of Homeland Security.
The suspicious object has since been rendered safe and analyzed by the Joint EOD Team and the FBI.
While further laboratory testing is pending, initial findings suggest the object is likely a deconstructed live firework munition with a fuse.
DCI has begun reviewing a significant amount of video evidence and has identified two subjects of interest.
Efforts to identify these individuals are underway with the assistance of law enforcement partners.
DCI urges residents with any information, images, or recordings of suspicious activity during the early morning hours of October 21st to come forward.
Investigators are particularly interested in activity between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on that date.
