Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse urging hunters to follow four simple steps of firearm safety this hunting season.

Dominguez also reminded hunters that wearing hunter orange coats, hats, vests or rain gear is required by law and saves lives every year.

Traversing rough terrain and climbing fences are common parts of hunting, but the Sheriff said many accidental discharges and injuries occur during those routine moments.

A Wyoming Game and Fish Department report cited a past incident near Cheyenne where a hunter’s missed shot at a pronghorn traveled nearly a mile before striking a vehicle on Interstate 80.

Each year, approximately 1,000 hunting-related injuries and about 100 fatalities are recorded across the nation, with many occurring in or near vehicles.

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office reminds hunters that safety begins long before the hunt.
