The Brinton Museum Opens “Her View: Women Artists in the Collection”, beginning October 30. The collection will be on display in the Jacomien Mars Reception Gallery beginning October 30 and continuing through December 22.

A reception to highlight the exhibition takes place at The Brinton Museum on October 29, from 5 to 7 PM. This program is offered as free admission and is open to the public. Members of the curatorial team and some of the guest curators will be available at the reception to talk with visitors and answer questions.

The exhibition focuses on the artistic contributions to the arts by women artists represented in the collection. This era of the institution’s collecting history, from 2002 forward, moves beyond the historical collection material found in the Bradford Brinton Memorial Collection established by Helen Brinton, Bradford’s sister.

In keeping with this year’s focus on celebrating women, and women in the arts, it seemed fitting to end the season’s exhibitions program by highlighting a show devoted to women artists. The Brinton Museum’s holdings of art comprise an extensive number of paintings, drawings, pastels, and prints by accomplished women artists from the Sheridan County area, and beyond.

Her View: Women Artists in the Collection is supported in part by grants from the Wyoming Arts Council, Edwin T. Meredith Foundation, Homer A. & Mildred S. Scott Foundation, and the Tucker Foundation.

During the time of Bradford Brinton, who owned the Quarter Circle A Ranch from 1923 until his death in 1936, the international focus on the arts primarily centered around the male perspective. However, women artists and artisans have always had a presence in the arts, even if overshadowed by male dominance. Her View: Women Artists in the Collection includes landscapes, abstraction, and also works relevant to social commentary.

As a complement to the exhibition, women in the arts from Sheridan County and beyond were invited as guest curators to select a work of art in the show and offer their view by writing a personal comment about the piece, giving voice to a personal and a contemporary perspective. These various statements will be on exhibit in the gallery.
