The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office is urging hunters and recreationalists to take steps before heading into the Bighorns that will help Search and Rescue find them should they become injured or lost.

Sheridan County Undersheriff Lieutenant Doug Sanders urged hunters to leave some basic information with a spouse, loved one or friend in the event something unexpected happens during the trip.

Information that should be left with someone includes the location of your hunting camp, the license plate number of the vehicle you are taking with you and the amount of time you plan on spending on the mountain.

Sheridan County Sheriff Levi Dominguez said no one plans on becoming injured or lost during a hunting trip or while seeking some rest in the forest, but it is best to plan for the worst-case scenario.

Becoming lost or injured in the Bighorn Mountains is nothing to be ashamed of, Dominguez said. Even some of the most experienced mountaineers can suffer an accident, but if they are late getting home, having a starting point for Search and Rescue is critical to recovery.
