On Tuesday, November 11, at 11 a.m., the Clearmont Historical Group (CHG) held their annual Veteran’s Day program commemorating American Veterans at the Clear Creek Valley Veteran’s Memorial.
Jacob Carvalho played taps to honor those who have died.
CHG President Robert Prusak talked about the history of Veteran’s Day, which was once called Armistice Day, the day when the armistice, or cease fire, was signed in 1918 between the Allied Forces of World War I and Germany. Later, the day was named Veteran’s Day to honor veterans of all of America’s wars.
Prusak added that for the past month, the Clearmont Historical Group has been displaying lighted luminary bags, which for a $1 or more donation, community members could inscribe the name of a veteran to honor them. These have been displayed in the Clearmont Community Center and the Clearmont Historical Center.
They are lighted with a battery-operated tea light, which flickers like a candle flame. Some of the monies raised by the donations for these bags was donated to the Civil Air Patrol Youth program.

Karen Carvalho, a senior member of the Civil Air Patrol Cloud Peak Squadron, gave a talk about the youth program. Her husband, Chad, is a squadron leader. She said it was important for the young to recognize the veterans. She and her husband have two youngsters who are in Civil Air Patrol.
She said that the goal of the program is to develop responsible citizens and future leaders in aerospace, the military and other fields. Those who have completed the full duration of the program are offered a slot into any one of the military service academies, including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and even the Space Force. Many can participate in flight training and learn to fly planes and can receive a pilot’s license. They can also participate in local search and rescue.

The Clearmont Historical Group presented Carvalho with a $500 donation for the program.
