Wyoming State Historic Sites Superintendent Sharie Shada is inviting the community to learn about a little known battle that occurred prior to the better known Fetterman Massacre.
In December 1866, Captain William Fetterman and his 80 soldiers were ambushed and killed by Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Lakota warriors near Fort Phil Kearny.
But that event and the well-known Wagon Box Fight that took place in August of 1867, are remembered for their numbers of soldiers killed or the act of holding their ground due largely to the new technology of the Springfield rifles.
Shada said Kevin O’Dell will speak on a lesser known fight.

O’Dell’s presentation begins at 12:30 pm, Saturday, Dec. 6, at Kearney Community Hall. Those interested can find Kearney Community Hall by taking Exit 44 on I-90. The Hall is 4.5 miles south of Story on US 87 and 1 mile west of Exit 44.
