The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce reports that over the past five years it has issued more than $1 million in Chamber Bucks, keeping those dollars local.
The Chamber Bucks program began in 1993 and issued $2,700 in Chamber Bucks that first year. Chamber Bucks are actual checks purchased through the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce. They are used like cash at participating local businesses and are backed by Chamber funds.
The intent of the program was to create a check-like currency that could only be spent at participating businesses to help downtown shops remain competitive at a time when large box stores were expanding into smaller communities. Since then, participation has ebbed and flowed but grown steadily. The record amount of Chamber Bucks issued remains more than $239,000 in 2021. In 2023, the Chamber issued just under $213,000, and in 2024 more than $229,000 in Chamber Bucks were issued.
Chamber Bucks can be purchased at the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce. Many residents use the check-like currency as gifts for hard-to-shop-for individuals.
Shoppers wearing the Stroll button who are caught shopping locally by one of the Chamber’s elves at a participating business could win between $25 and $200 in Chamber Bucks. The Get Caught Shopping promotion begins on Stroll Day, Nov. 28, and runs for the following three weeks.
