If you’d like to cut your own tree this year, Christmas tree permits are available for purchase from the Bureau of Land Management and the Bighorn National Forest Service Office. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.
The permit through the Forest Service allows you to cut a Christmas tree within designated areas of the Bighorn National Forest. The cost is $8 per tree with a maximum of five trees. You can purchase a permit online here. Cut trees only within the national forest boundary and respect surrounding private property. Trees cannot be cut within 300 feet of cabins, lodges, resorts, campgrounds, picnic grounds, administrative sites (such as Ranger Stations), or within 100 feet of State Highways, however, you may cut right next to Forest Roads. Trees cannot be cut in the Cloud Peak Wilderness.
The cost for a permit to cut a tree on BLM land is $7.50 to $10 per tree, depending on location. Up to a maximum of five Christmas trees can be purchased by an individual for personal use. Permits can be purchased online here. Permits may also be purchased between 7:45 am and 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday from your local BLM Wyoming field offices, excluding the Newcastle and Cody Field Offices. A BLM permit is valid for trees located on BLM-administered lands only.
