UW Student Receiving Recognition For Studies in Space Farming

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, University of Wyoming Director of Institutional Communications Chad Baldwin spoke on a UW student who has earned recognition due to her work on space-farming research. 

Drea Hineman is an undergraduate student studying at the University of Wyoming. Originally from Gillette, Hineman recently earned regional recognition for her innovative agricultural research supported by NASA.

According to UW, Hineman is a senior majoring in plant production and protection in the UW Department of Plant Sciences and a Wyoming NASA Space Grant Consortium Research Fellow. Hineman studies sustainable food production in reduced-gravity environments; farming in space.

Her project, which she designed herself under the mentorship of plant sciences Assistant Professor JJ Chen, was ranked first among 29 undergraduate applicants to the 2025 Wyoming NASA Space Grant fellowship. 

Hineman recently presented her findings at the Interplanetary Life symposium in Boise, showing students and young professionals from several western states that meaningful space research can start at a Wyoming college greenhouse.
