The Wyoming Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) has resumed the approval of eligible applications, effective immediately.
This federally funded program has been on pause since Oct. 15 due to the federal government shutdown and lack of funding. The Department of Health and Human Services, the federal agency governing LIEAP, has sent the Wyoming Department of Family Services, which administers LIEAP, $9.6 million in federal funding, necessary to run the program and fund eligible applications.
With the restoration of federal funding, the LIEAP team has begun notifying applicants whether they are eligible to receive benefits, and, if eligible, the amount of the benefit, by email or mail. LIEAP will continue to accept applications for the 2025/2026 heating season until April 30, 2026. Please apply online at lieapwyo.org or call 1-800-246-4221.
LIEAP helps eligible Wyoming households pay a portion of winter heating bills for natural gas, electricity, propane, coal, wood, and other fuel types. The program also offers crisis assistance to address heating emergencies, such as a broken furnace, an empty fuel tank, or a pending utility disconnection.
Households must meet LIEAP income requirements, with a limit of up to 60% of the state’s median income. For instance, a four-person household must have an annual income of $68,902 or less. Priority is given to households with elderly members (60+), individuals with disabilities, and families with children under five. The program helps both homeowners and renters, including those in permanently parked RVs. LIEAP offers a one-time benefit for eligible LIEAP seasonal recipients who encounter unforeseen heating-related expenses.
Last season, LIEAP distributed $6.1 million to help 8,236 Wyoming households stay warm.
