Work on decontaminating the old Acme Power Plant building site north of Sheridan has made progress, but a portion of the building will not be salvageable.
The Sheridan County Conservation District says workers have removed as much asbestos as they could from the building, but the roof has started to collapse in the 2 turbine rooms, making it a safety hazard.
District Manager Carrie Rogaczewski says that area will have to be demolished, and the challenge now is to get the funding to perform that work.
“As a result we’re working with our engineer, DEQ and EPA on how to pull all of those pieces together and how to pull the various other funding sources together to move that forward.”
Rogaczewski adds soil decontamination around the site still needs to be done, and it’s possible for that work and the demolition work could be done at the same time.
It’s possible that all the reclamation work on the site could be done by the end of next year.
