Healthy Land, Healthy Herds: Wet Meadow Project Strengthens Working Lands

Sheridan Community Land Trust is reporting on the completion of a major wet meadow restoration project on private ranch land along Sixmile Creek near Ranchester.

According to SCLT, the multi-year effort focused on slowing erosion, improving soil health, and strengthening grasslands that support both grazing livestock and wildlife habitat. Over the past two summers, crews installed 98 Zeedyk structures, low-tech tools designed to spread water, trap sediment, and stabilize soil in wet meadow areas.

To bolster the work and address damage caused by heavy spring moisture in 2025, SCLT brought in wetland restoration contractor Brian Stampe of Canopy Care to inspect, repair, and expand the network of structures. The project brought together SCLT staff, the Montana Conservation Corps, community volunteers, and conservation partners, with support from Pheasants Forever and the National Wild Turkey Federation. According to SCLT Director of Conservation John Graves, the restoration improves wildlife habitat and boosts the productivity of ranchlands, offering benefits for both conservation and agriculture.

SCLT reports they will monitor the restored site over the next four years through established photo points to document changes in vegetation, soil, and water flow. Graves said the project reflects what can be achieved when landowners and partners work closely together, noting that local cooperation and a strong community spirit helped ensure the success of the restoration.
