Sheridan Advocacy and Resource Center Highlights Need for Volunteers

December 17, 2025

News – Sheridan Media

The Sheridan Advocacy and Resource Center is continuing to highlight the critical role volunteers play in supporting residents during their most vulnerable moments.

Volunteers help the Center provide services to victims of violent crimes, including domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, elder abuse and child abuse. The Center works to emotionally and physically empower those affected while supporting them through the justice system, a process that can take years in some cases.

During an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Executive Director Yvonne Swanson and Volunteer Coordinator Brittany Hamilton spoke on the critical role volunteers play in the Advocacy and Resource Center’s mission.

There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available at the Center with different levels of commitment to fit individual schedules. Whether someone has just a few hours or an entire day to give, volunteer support helps ensure services remain accessible to those in need when they need them.

One volunteer option is serving as a crisis line volunteer. After receiving over 40 hours of required training, these advocates provide crisis intervention, emotional support, and safety planning for victims of violent crime while also keeping each call confidential. Hamilton spoke on the need for volunteers to be understanding and available to the victim’s schedule.

Crisis line volunteers must be at least 18 years old, training timelines and scheduling is flexible. Swanson explained that due to the nature of their work, Advocacy and Resource Center volunteers are legally required to undergo not only training but a background check.

The stress of this critical volunteer work often means many positions are available. Swanson said she and her staff are always available to speak with each volunteer and give them time to decompress.
