Warming Shelter Open in Story Due to Power Outages and Incoming Winter Weather

December 20, 2025

News – Sheridan Media

Sheridan County Emergency Management is responding to ongoing power outages caused by high winds affecting several areas of the county. While power has been restored to most homes in Dayton, damage assessment and restoration efforts continue in Story.

At this time, the main part of Story has power; however, areas west of Wagon Box off Fish
Hatchery Road are unlikely to have power restored tonight. Additional winter weather, including wind and snow, is expected this evening. To support residents impacted by the outage and cold temperatures, a temporary warming shelter has been made available at the Story Library, located at 20 N Piney Rd, Story, WY 82832. The shelter can provide heat, a warm place to stay, and the ability to charge medical devices. The facility is not staffed but will be opened as needed.

“Our focus remains on keeping residents safe as weather conditions continue to impact power
restoration,” said Jesse Ludikhuize, Emergency Management Coordinator for Sheridan County.
“Anyone who needs a warm place to go or access to power this evening should contact
Emergency Management so we can assist.” Residents who need access to the warming shelter are asked to contact Sheridan County Emergency Management at 307-752-2174.

The public is reminded to use extreme caution around downed trees and power lines and to
always assume downed lines are energized. Any downed power lines or hazardous situations
should be reported immediately by calling 911.
