On Sunday, December 21, ten youth riders from the Pine Ridge, Northern Cheyenne, and Wind River Reservations met in Sheridan to ride to the Fetterman Monument, retracing the ride that was made by many of their ancestors to engage the U.S. Army near where the Fetterman Monument now stands.

The riders started from the Sheridan Fairgrounds and followed much of the same route that the war parties may have traveled in 1866.

A good crowd came to the monument to greet the riders. During the wait, Donovin Sprague treated those attending with some flute music, and when asked about the flute he told the legend of how the flute was given to the Sioux people.

Donvin makes his own flutes, as well as traditional bows.

There were drums to welcome the riders, as well as drumming to send the riders on their way after the ceremony.

Mark Roundstone of the Northern Cheyenne tribe, talked about how this ride came about.

There were ten riders at the event, representing the ten decoys that were at the battle in 1866. Warriors from the Sioux, Arapaho and the Cheyenne took part in the battle. Roundstone explained how they knew there were ten decoys.

Peji Yellow Bull, who lives in the Red Cloud community at Pine Ridge, S.D. commented on the Youth Ride.

After the ceremony at the monument, the riders joined the community for a pot luck dinner at Kearny Hall.
