Hunting is a major activity in Wyoming. For many, it is a way of life, providing much-needed meat each year. For others, hunting is rooted in time spent outdoors with family or longtime friends.
It came as no surprise that one of Sheridan Media’s most clicked stories of 2025 was an alert from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department titled “Big Game Applications Open for 2025–26 Hunting Season.”
For many hunters, it is a highly anticipated activity each year. Whether applying for big or small game, the excitement remains the same, and each license application opening date is awaited with bated breath by both resident and out-of-state hunters.
Hunting is also a major contributor to Wyoming’s economy. A 2018 analysis from the University of Wyoming showed hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing activities made a significant impact on the state’s economy in 2016. UW’s findings showed hunters, anglers and wildlife watchers spent an estimated $788 million in the Cowboy State that year, with total economic importance estimated at up to $1 billion in overall business activity.
As Sheridan Media looks back on the stories engaged with the most on its website each year, articles, alerts and announcements from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department consistently rank among the top 10.
