The Museum at the Bighorns, at 171 North Main in Sheridan, hosted their first Family Day on January 2nd, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. According to Museum Director Carrie Edinger, 86 kids and their families attended during the two-hour event.
There were several different educational sites set up in the museum space. There were “Digging into History” dig boxes, educational artifacts, grinding slabs, and coloring pages hosted by The Sheridan/Johnson County Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society and SWCA Environmental Consultants.

There was an activity table featuring various animals from the High Plains and mountains with a focus on their diets and why they may differ.

Previewing the future partnership between the Museum at the Bighorns and the Natural History Museum of Wyoming, there was a table with a Champsosaurus puzzle and small fossils for the youngsters. Dave Nicolarsen and Mike Bloodsworth of the museum were on hand to answer questions and help the youngsters find tiny plant fossils in a bowl of coarse sand.

The family day is a part of the museum’s goal to revive their education program. Edinger said she is visiting the school districts and the YMCA after school program to let youngsters and teachers know what the museum offers.

Family Day at the Museum is generously supported by the Perkins Foundation. Currently, winter hours for the museum are Tues-Saturday 10-5.
