Gillette College could become a fully accredited learning institution sooner rather than later, and whenever that happens, Sheridan College will be impacted in terms of how much money it receives from the Wyoming State Legislature.
At last month’s Sheridan College Board Of Trustees Meeting, College President Dr. Walter Tribley said it was anticipated that Gillette College could receive full accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission, at around the start of fiscal year 2029, but now it’s possible that that time table could be moved up by 1 or 2 years, meaning this coming July 1st is a possibility.
In the eyes of the Wyoming Legislature, Gillette College is still a part of the Northern Wyoming Community College District with Sheridan College, and since Gillette is not fully accredited, Sheridan receives money from the legislature on its behalf.
Dr. Tribley added that there could be some legislative action forth-coming that would allow Gillette College to receive some state funding.
“We’ve all been working under the plan as was presented back in 2020-2021, that should their college enter the state funding model, if you will, getting allocation, they would be fully accredited at levying 4-mils and we’re hearing that those 2 requirements might be changed through legislation, which would be very challenging for Sheridan College, incredibly challenging and it’s the timing that’s most concerning to us.”
Dr. Tribley added if and when such legislation passes, or when Gillette College becomes fully accredited, it’s difficult to tell how much of a financial impact it will have on Sheridan College, however the budget for the last several school years ended with a surplus, meaning the College has some funding in reserve.
Spring Semester classes are scheduled to begin on January 20th.
