The University of Wyoming Extension has announced it will host its WESTI Ag Day conference from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday Feb. 3 at the Washakie Museum and Cultural Center, located at 2200 Big Horn Ave. in Worland. The all-day conference is free and open to the public and is designed to provide professional farmers with current, research-based information on best practices in Wyoming agriculture.

According to the UW Extension Office, this year’s WESTI Ag Day will focus on sugar beets. Washakie County Extension Educator Dan VanderPloeg, who is organizing the event, said the conference aims to deliver practical value to producers.

“If you haven’t been to a sugar beet meeting recently, there’s a lot of information to be had,” VanderPloeg said. “The point is to make it valuable for the farmers that are coming.”

Speakers include University of Wyoming Professor of Weed Science Andrew Kniss, UW Extension Pesticide Safety Education Program Assistant Coordinator Jeremiah Vardiman and UW Extension Plant Pathologist Jean Williams-Woodward. Kniss will discuss control strategies for kochia, while Vardiman will focus on weed control related to palmer amaranth. Williams-Woodward will address cercospora, a fungal disease that impacts sugar beets. Industry experts will also present on current sugar beet opportunities and challenges.

The conference will include a vendor reception and several door prizes for attendees. Agricultural businesses will be on site throughout the day displaying products such as seeds and services including drone operation and irrigation installation.

To pre-register for WESTI Ag Day, contact the Washakie County Extension Office at 307-347-3431. Participants may also register on site beginning at 8 a.m. Lunch will be provided for registered participants.
