Sheridan Police Department traffic stop data for 2025 shows officers conducted 5,635 traffic stops throughout the year, using stops as a primary tool to promote roadway safety and voluntary compliance with traffic laws, according to SPD Chief Travis Koltiska.

Chief Koltiska and Captain Tom Ringley shared the statistics during an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, outlining how traffic enforcement fits into the department’s broader mission of preventing crashes, injuries and property damage.

Of the 2025 traffic stops, Capt. Ringley reports that approximately 30% resulted in written citations and 67% resulted in warnings, with 25% of all arrests during the year originating from traffic stops. Ringley said officers are generally expected to issue either a citation or a written warning at each stop and that officers are given discretion based on factors such as the severity of the violation, prior warnings and environmental conditions.

SPD also released demographic data tied to the 1,717 traffic citations issued in 2025, showing 67% were issued to males and 33% to females, with 88% issued to white drivers, 4% to Hispanic or Latino drivers, 3% to Native American drivers, 1% to Asian drivers and 2% listed as unknown or not reported. Ringley said all of these numbers are strikingly similar to previous years.

Koltiska said the department uses data-driven high visibility enforcement. Through the analysis of traffic studies, utilizing stationary radar in neighborhoods, as well as media and public education efforts, the SPD focuses enforcement in areas and times associated with higher crash rates and DWUI arrests.
