The Sheridan County Recreation District is currently registering kids for lacrosse programs this spring and has added a new introductory program.
According to World Lacrosse, the game originated within Native American tribes and was originally known as stickball. These games were major events that often took place over several days and were played over large open areas between villages. Goals, which could be trees or other natural features, might be anywhere from 500 yards to several miles apart. Any number of players were involved, with some estimates suggesting between 100 and 1,000 players participated in a single game.
The sport has evolved over time and is now considered one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. Youth Recreation Supervisor JD Williams said the Sheridan County Recreation District has offered lacrosse programs for years and has added a new component for the 2026 season.

Youth lacrosse programs within the district include divisions for boys in 3rd through 5th grade and 6th through 7th grade, as well as a girls division for 3rd through 8th grade. Registration is open through March 20 with a fee of $80. The season runs March 30 through May 8 with practices and games held Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Dan Madia Field. Lacrosse equipment will be provided.
The new Littles Lacrosse for 1st and 2nd grade players is an introductory program that is open to both boys and girls and focuses on teaching basic lacrosse skills. Registration also runs through March 20 and costs $40. The season runs March 31 through April 16 with sessions scheduled Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Dan Madia Field. Participants will receive a stick, helmet, and mouth guard, with sticks and helmets to be stored at the field.
The district is also looking for any volunteers who would like to give their time to these new little players and teach them the rules and strategies of the sport.
