The Ucross Art Gallery invited the public to meet the featured artists behind Resilience, the current exhibit featuring recipients of the Native American Fellowship at the Ucross Art Gallery. The art explores a range of media, from printmaking to performance to beadwork, in two special upcoming events!

Both free and open to the public, on Friday, April 17, there will be an artist talk at 11 a.m. at Sheridan College and a 6 p.m. public reception in the Ucross Art Gallery, including a live performance.

Ucross President Caitlin Addlesperger talks about the current exhibit.

The Native American fellowships for visual artists began in 2017, and later expanded to include writers and performers.

The exhibition, curated by Ucross Fellow Marwin Begaye (Navajo), explores the resiliency of Indigenous artists across generations.

Resilience features artwork by sculptor Gina Herrera (Tesuque Pueblo), mixed-media artist Wade Patton (Oglala Lakota), and visual and performance artist Sarah Ortegon HighWalking (Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho), and writer Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians).

Addlesperger added about Clapsaddle’s work.

On April 17, attendees are invited to dive deeper into Resilience by attending a curator and artist talk at 11 a.m. at Kinnison Hall at Sheridan College. The featured artists will discuss their heritage, creative process, and more.

Ucross will host a reception at the Ucross Art Gallery at 6 p.m. This event includes a curator’s talk, the opportunity to meet the featured artists, gallery tours, complimentary refreshments made by the Ucross culinary team, and a special performance.

Held in the heart of the gallery, this collaborative performance, featuring artwork by Marwin, will meld traditional dance, printmaking, spoken poetry, and installation by creating a large-scale print using the pressure of Sarah’s dance atop multiple woodcut blocks to transfer ink onto paper, while Annette reads her poetry aloud.

Resilience will be on view through May 15. The Ucross Art Gallery and Café, located at 30 Big Red Lane in Ucross, is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with free admission.
