A Look Back in Time: Oct. 5, 1916

The republican clans gathered at Beckton tonight, and the result is one of the largest and most enthusiastic political gatherings held during this campaign. There was a large turnout of men and women, and a notable feature was the large number of young people present.

Today marked the official commencement of the beet harvest in the territory of the Sheridan Sugar company. C.H. Thatcher, manager of the company, said practically all the growers started pulling right on the dot. The harvest may be hampered by an unexpected difficulty caused by a shortage of cars to haul the beets to the factory.

Mr. and Mrs. Clark Hart of Dayton were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Will Ganther of Beckton.
