January 19, 2022

The Sheridan Police Department has released a Use of Force Summary for the year 2021 and spoke on the use of force during an appearance on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program.

The summary includes the number of incidents any SPD officer was involved in that resulted in the use of physical force or empty hand techniques, a show of force that required the officer to draw a weapon (this includes non-lethal), or deadly force.

To put the numbers into context, SPD Captain Tom Ringley reported that in the 2021 year, SPD officers made 522 custodial arrests that resulted from investigations, 253 arrests as a result of warrants issued by the courts and officers issued 841 summons.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Ringley told listeners any use of force and the policies, statutes and laws surrounding its use are under constant review.
