Commission Recommends How Special Districts Use Settlement Funds

With Johnson County looking to receive $22.7 million in tax settlement money with Carbon Creek/US Realm, that means special districts, as well as the county and the school district, will be getting significant amounts of funding over the next eight years.

Although the agreement still needs to be ratified by the bankruptcy judge, it does look promising that it will be accepted, according to discussions at this week’s special meeting in the matter.

Commission Chairman Bill Novotny was asked if the commissioners would be making recommendations on how the special districts spend their funds.

Commissioner Linda Greenough joked that she was going to suggest the special districts not spend their money like drunken sailors, but agreed with Novotny.

Commissioner Bob Perry added that he feels any entity that the county has direct expenses with such as the library, fair board, and museum, that any building projects be approved by the commission in hopes of not spending money on things the county may not be able to afford to maintain.
