On Monday afternoon, June 27, the Sheridan City Fire-Rescue held a two-part ceremony at the fire hall on East Works. The first part of the ceremony was dedication of the new Tower Truck for the Fire Department.
Fire Chief Gary Harnish explained about the dedication ceremony.
But, since the new truck weighs around 80,000 pounds, “They’ll be a motor running and it will be in reserve,” Harnish added. “The push in is symbolic.”
In 1918 the city purchased their first fire apparatus that could both drive and pump water. A year later they purchased the 1919 fire truck, which has been restored and is in the fire hall.
Paul Juergens, of the Sheridan Fire Department, talked about the American LaFrance 1919 engine.
The American LaFrance company was an American vehicle manufacturer which focused primarily on the production of fire engines and other emergency vehicles.
Harnish said that many changes have occurred in Sheridan over the 20 years since they purchased the current 75-foot ladder truck. There are more three to five story buildings, and houses sit farther back from the road and the parking lot.
The 75-foot ladder truck would have trouble reaching the upper floors, or back from the parking lot. SFR decided to buy the 100-foot tower truck with longer reach. “It will increase our firefighting and rescue capacity,” he said.
The second part was a medal ceremony honoring SFR personnel commendations for their actions during past events or their efforts to improve the fire service.
