Scammer us polls and quizzes to farm information

July 28, 2022

Scams have become a multi billion dollar industry all over the world. As law enforcement works to find these criminals, investigations are often dead ends due to ocean and international borders as these scammers are often overseas.

Law enforcement makes efforts to keep the public informed of the various types of scams that they investigate. Scammers will use smoke-screen tactics and communication to gain any insight to personal information they have available, phone calls, internet, texting, pyramid schemes, traditional mail, email, and social media.

It’s through these practices that scammers cost the American people nearly $20 billion dollars in 2020.

While appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputy Kayla Oswald told listeners about a scam the office has noticed gaining popularity.

Oswald suggests taking the quiz on a piece of paper or simply passing over the quiz or poll.

Information farming is a key component to the scammer’s practice. Through many of these publicly posted polls and quizzes, scammers can learn passwords or vital information that may appear innocent to the laymen.

If you believe you are a victim of one of these scams, notify the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office at (307) 672-3455.

Those who feel they may have been victims of scams, can also file a complaint at ic3.gov. This site is the Federal Bureau of Investigations Internet Crime Complaint Center. The site also contains FAQs and Consumer Alerts plus many more resources.
