The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce began hosting the Christmas Stroll in downtown Sheridan 27 years ago.

While appearing on Sheridan Meida’s Public Pulse, Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce Program Development Director  Teresa Detimore and Christmas Stroll Planning Committee Chairperson Robby Smith talked a little about the history of the stroll, of which Smith has been a part of for each year.

According to Smith, the Retail Committee met after a bleak Black Friday turnout to develop a way to attract more shoppers to the downtown area during the holidays.

A former Sheridan business owner, Smith said there have been some changes over the years, but each change brought more folks to the downtown area and created more of a community minded fellowship than simply another Black Friday event.

One of the later additions to the Christmas Stroll was the inclusion of the Christmas Stroll buttons. The buttons are $5 purchase at participating businesses and the Sheridan Chamber of Commerce. Detimore told listeners how the buttons can lead to some prizes and the schedule of the big man himself, Santa Claus.

Sheridan’s Main Street and Grinnell Plaza will close to vehicles from 4 to 8 p.m. for the wagon rides, marshmallow roasting and food and beverage giveaways.

Starting Stroll Day, and through Christmas Eve, Stroll button holders can check all participating businesses for the number that matches their Stroll button number.

The fun starts at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov. 25. For a full schedule and more, visit the Chamber’s page here.
