State Senator Dave Kinskey (R-Sheridan, Johnson Counties), in his weekly talk on the legislative session Wednesday, was asked about SF111, which sets change of sex treatments for those under 18 as child abuse.

The bill was passed by the Senate.

If passed by the legislature, it will basically set the legal age for gender transformation surgery and/or other gender treatments at 18.

Kinskey explained the bill further.

According to Kinskey, there is evidence showing most, if not all pre-teens and teen go through a period of trying to figure out who and what they are, and sometimes doubt their gender identity.

But there is growing evidence that the doubts are not necessarily a “natural” phenomena but a social contagion.

Kinskey said studies conducted by the Swedish National Health Service has prompted bans all but the most extreme cases for gender treatments, based on evidence that it is a social contagion phenomena and that many teens that go through the treatments later regret it and want it reversed.

He said the bill does allow treatment when there are medical exceptions.

Kinskey was asked if this bill was a government over reach, and he said, “No, I don’t believe so. I think it’s protecting children.”
