SPD is searching for people of high character to carry the shield

April 19, 2023

News – Sheridan Media

The Chief of the Sheridan Police Department, Travis Koltiska and Captain Tom Ringley appeared on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse to discuss the hiring standards of the city’s police force.

The Chief and Captain have discussed the rigorous requirements in the past as well as the standard of character that leadership is looking for when filling a uniform.

Ringley told listeners that hiring based on character has proven to be the best practice more than once. While in other departments, leadership is sometimes forced to scan through body cam footage searching for possible disciplinary problems, in Sheridan, they often find something different when reviewing footage.

High standards exist in jobs that all too often see the consequences of life and death. Search and rescue members often hike the mountains during down times to ensure they can remain in dangerous territory during long, cold and wet time periods searching for those who have become lost. Firefighters serving in fire departments have undergone not only tough physical training, but long hours of fire science classes and study. Those examples are only tips of the icebergs that make up the time spent training to perform their duties to the fullest when the time comes.

According to Ringley, the SPD has been forced to turn potential recruits away in the past. Law enforcement personnel have to be able to trust the uniform next to them, because lives and the safety of the community could be on the line.
