The Johnson County School Board, during their regular meeting for May Monday night, voted to remove from their agenda the decision to set the mill levies for both the County Recreation Board and the Board of Cooperative Higher Educational Services (BOCHES).

Board member Randy Brown asked what would happen if the board chose not to approve a mill levy for the Rec Board, which Superintendent Charles Auzqui explained.

Brown asked to remove the mill levy for the Rec Board from the agenda, explaining that he isn’t opposed to the programs the Rec Board funds, he just doesn’t believe the school district should be taxing the public for projects or programs that are not directly related to the schools they are in charge of.

Later in the discussions, District Business Manager Connie Gay said she thought the mill levy decisions needed to be advertised to allow public comment, and suggested the board move the decisions to a later meeting.

The board voted to remove both items from the Consent Agenda and reschedule them at the future budget session.
