Citizens concerned over the announcement that the Buffalo City Council was reducing this year’s amount of funding to the St. Francis Animal Shelter came to their regular meeting Tuesday evening to talk about the issue.

According to discussions, the council is considering reducing their contribution to the shelter from $18,000 to just $4,000, prompting the shelter board to consider reducing services and cutting back their hours of operation.

According to a Facebook post, the shelter will no longer be able to take pet owner surrenders, provide a community vet day, and will need to reduce their hours of operation to Fridays only from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with other days by appointment only.

Shelter Board President Laura Ulrich spoke to the council, explaining what also might need to happen if the shelter isn’t funded at $18,000.

Many others concerned also spoke to the council, essentially making the same request to fund the shelter, and explaining the much-needed services it provides to the community.

After the discussions, the council decided to move the decision on the agreement with the shelter to a later meeting to give all parties involved a chance to discuss the matter.
