The Memorial Day weekend for many is considered to be the unofficial start to the summer season, but Sheridan County has its own tradition.
This coming Sunday (May 21st) is the annual Eaton’s Ranch Horse Drive as more than 2-hundred horses will trot down Wyarno Road and 5th Street to the Eaton’s Ranch on the northwest side of Sheridan.
The horses travel more than 100 miles over the course of about 3 days, from their winter pasture to the ranch, and it’s the last day that tends to get the public’s attention.
The ranch has been around since 1904, although it is unknown how long the horse drive has been going on.
Nate Schmeiser is one of the cowboys who helps herd the horses during the drive.
He says one of the reasons why the drive is done is because of necessity.

“It’s our tradition to trail the horses from one ranch from our winter pasture back to home up here up against the face and so it’s sort of the unofficial start of the summer for most of the people of Sheridan and sort of the unofficial start of the season for us.”
A ranch spokesperson says the estimated time that the horses will pass through Sheridan on 5th Street is between 9 and 10:30am.
